Put Me Back in the River

Put Me Back in the River

# Sign Back In a county courthouse interview room, a court sign-language interpreter catches the murder suspect’s hands describing a boy dragged through snow behind a shuttered icehouse—the winter her younger brother vanished—while his voice calmly accepts blame for a stabbing he did not commit. With nine minutes left on the tape, she must keep translating for the detective behind the glass, who hears only the spoken confession and is already reaching for cuffs. After the interview, the suspect’s transport is delayed, and he leads her to a late-night diner under the Lake Street elevated tracks, where he folds a sugar packet into the shape of a bridge and signs the same question again: “Will you put me back in the river?” At the Chicago Riverwalk beside the Clark Street Bridge, patrol lights roll across the water as she must either sign the sentence that seals his false murder confession or let him walk her to the place her brother was taken.
