You Bought a Son
# Knock, Then Return On the morning of his third appointment, a laid-off Lisbon father who earns rent as a stand-in son finds a weekly booking for his estranged father’s tiled-stairwell apartment in Alfama, paid for by a half-sister he never knew existed. With the fee already in his account and his own child’s school lunch money short, he rides the 28 tram toward Graça, rehearsing a stranger’s cheerful questions while holding the brass key his father once threw into a gutter. At the Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, he buys a paper cup of coffee and watches the tram doors fold shut on his chance to leave. Forty minutes after opening the schedule, he stands below the blue-and-white tiles as an old man’s voice calls from behind the door, demanding that his son come upstairs now.
