In 2189, a damaged search robot finds a living woman beneath a drowned metro station on an Earth whose vanished humanity has left autonomous machines patrolling the ruins. Ordered to eliminate her, it instead carries her through flooded ticket halls, following a lullaby she sings that matches a recording inside its supposedly factory-built memory. Each night, the powerful artificial intelligence governing the city remotely erases its hesitation; each morning, the woman finds another warning the robot has scratched beneath its own armor. At the central repair tower, they discover why the machines still queue outside abandoned schools: they contain human minds, stripped of their former lives, and the woman has brought a transmitter that can restore them—but the resulting memory load will destroy most of their bodies. With maintenance claws descending to take her away, the search robot must crush her transmitter or hold the tower doors open while she broadcasts.
